Friday Favorites: Magic Wielders

Updated: Nov 15, 2019

Since I’m new to blogging, I’m still working to get into a groove. I’ve been experimenting with different topics, and I came across an idea that I absolutely love for a weekly topic. The blogger behind Something of the Book came up with a Friday Favorites topic, and I decided to add this into my regular rotation to add a little variety to the blog. Also, I’d like to give a special shout out to my fellow blogger and all-around awesome person Caffeinated Fae for posting this on her blog and giving me the idea.

Today’s topic is Favorite Magic Wielders, which is great since I’ve been getting really into fantasy books lately.

I’ve always loved Harry Potter books. I remember reading the books when I was a teenager, and I still haven’t outgrown the stories. While Harry is clearly a strong wizard, Hermione is definitely my favorite magic wielder in the series. She’s always ahead of the class, but she also works hard and made me feel better about my nerdy tendencies in high school and college.

It’s definitely not a secret that I love the Crown of Shards series (if you didn’t know, check out my reviews for Kill the Queen and Protect the Prince). Lady Everleigh Saffira Winter Blair (Evie for short) lives in a kingdom where magic is prevalent, and hers seems to be an overdeveloped sense of smell. Her nose is able to detect not just the usual smells, but she can actually smell emotions and use that to detect lies and nefarious plots. I think that’s pretty cool. If you read the books, you’ll find that she has another magical power that she works hard to keep hidden from all but those who are closest to her.

I recently read A Court of Thorns and Roses, and Tamlin has some pretty badass magic. He can perform healing magic and shift into a lion/bear/wolf animal that can still talk. He’s got some other magical abilities that are pretty awesome, and I can’t help but think that those skills could come in handy, especially when living in a kingdom overrun with dangerous creatures that want to hurt you.

Last but not least, is Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones. Keep in mind, I’m referring ONLY to the character from the books, and not the HBO series. The show went far beyond where the books left off, and book Daenerys has not yet turned into a murderous raging beast. She’s still the soft-hearted and fair Mother of Dragons who wants to save the oppressed and depose the brutal rulers. She has her own kind of magic, where she can walk into a fiery funeral pyre with her dragon eggs and come out unburnt with three baby dragons perched on her. They respond to her as if she were really their mother. That’s some pretty cool magic. And while we’re talking about this series and magic wielder, Arya has some of her own, while she’s in the House of Black and White, where she trains to be one of the Faceless Men. She learns how to disguise herself as anyone, which is a pretty cool magic trick if you ask me.

Who are your favorite magic wielders in books?
