Dragma's Keep by Vance Pumphrey

Updated: Sep 20, 2019

I received this book from Book Tasters in return for an honest review.

Dragma's Keep is a fantasy novel that was inspired by the author's experiences playing Dungeons and Dragons. My experience with Dungeons and Dragons is limited to an episode I saw once of iZombie, so this definitely isn't my area of expertise, and my knowledge of the fantasy genre only goes as far as the Game of Thrones books, so this was uncharted territory for me. I was hesitant at first, but this book quickly won me over.

A band of unlikely companions come together for various reasons. Some are in it for selfish reasons (i.e. treasure), while others have more pure motivations. But they are all united in their quest regardless. All of the characters have their quirks and are likable in their own ways.

This book has a lot of action and fast-paced battle scenes. There's also a lot of witty banter, which I found to be enjoyable. While they may rile each other up, they get along well despite their differences of opinion and often seem more like a family.

I noticed a lot of spelling and grammatical errors in the book. It seems like it needs some more thorough editing, although this didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book. The author uses various names and titles for each character, which can get confusing if you don't pay attention. For example, the main character Sordaak is alternatively called a sorcerer, mage, magicuser, and caster. This can make it difficult to follow at times, since it happens with each of the five main characters. As long as you're paying close attention though, you should be able to make sense of it.

The battle scenes aren't too gory, although there is some profanity in the book. This book would be best for older adolescents and adults. Overall, I enjoyed reading the book and would suggest it as a good, fast-paced, fun read.
